Most household wiring lasts 25 to 30 years. Many homes across the North East, from Whitley Bay terraces to older Hexham cottages, are now well past that. Here are the warning signs that your electrics may need replacing.
The warning signs
An old fuse box with rewirable fuses instead of a modern consumer unit with RCD protection.
Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cables, which were phased out decades ago.
Round-pin or brown Bakelite sockets and switches.
Lights that flicker or dim when appliances switch on.
Sockets or switches that feel warm, or a burning smell near outlets.
Frequent trips or blown fuses.
Not enough sockets, leading to extension leads in every room.
If you notice burning smells, scorch marks or warm sockets, switch off the affected circuit and call an electrician straight away.
Full or partial rewire?
A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property and usually takes five to ten days for a typical house. A partial rewire updates only the circuits that need it, such as a kitchen extension or an old lighting circuit. We always start with an inspection so you only pay for the work you actually need.
Not sure where to start?
An EICR inspection tells you exactly what condition your wiring is in, with each issue coded by urgency. It is the best first step if you are buying an older home or planning a renovation.
